Job Information

Amazon Sr. Design Technologist, Futures Design in London, United Kingdom

Description

Futures Design is the advanced concept design and incubation team within Amazon’s Device and Services Design Group (DDG). We’re responsible for exploring and defining think (very) big opportunities globally — so that we can better understand how new products and services might enrich the lives of our customers. We work on devices and services that are not yet on our roadmap, with the runway to invent and design category-defining transformational customer experiences. We ground ourselves in customer insights to envision speculative futures through powerful prototyping and storytelling. It’s our job to create robust visions that transform into new markets, technologies and offerings.

About this role

We’re looking for a Senior Design Technologist who is passionate about inventing meaningful future experiences that have positive global impact and improve the lives of our customers. A leader in emergent technologies and creative thinking, you’re able to imagine speculative futures and bring them to life through rich prototyping. As you explore these scenarios in new and immersive ways, you take the team and wider stakeholders on the journey of seeing into the future today all whilst communicating the technology with clarity and simplicity. Your work will demonstrate and evaluate UX concepts where you’ll cleverly hack your way around platform limitations, tinker with concepts, think creatively in code and deliver quickly, iteratively and collaboratively within a design studio environment. You’re comfortable working with a multi-disciplinary team from early concept generation (brainstorms and basic sketches) through to polished solutions (high fidelity interactive outputs that excites leaders to invest).

About you

You’re a creative engineer and love to live in the space between Design and Technology. You love exploring and understanding emerging technologies as well as physical prototypes. Your curiosity of emerging tech means you have experience or a solid understanding of Generative AI and Machine Learning. You may also have an interest other areas such as immersive 3D creation tools, motion graphics and animation, visual and experience design tools, prototyping toolkits, web and mobile development, conversational interfaces and electronic prototyping toolkits. You aren’t bound by coding languages and choose the right technology to flesh out design concepts (interaction, visual and motion). If you don’t know the answer you know where to go and aren’t afraid to ask for help. You thrive in a multi disciplinary team and as a natural problem solver, your wealth of experience across different technical disciplines means that you can comfortably provide solutions through experimentation and pushing boundaries. You’re able to work with minimal documentation and technical support. You work creatively through and around perceived limitations and challenges imposed by platforms to create delightful experiences.

Key job responsibilities

On any given day you may be:

  • Developing prototypes to demonstrate the vision and functionality of proposed solutions to the team and senior leadership

  • Researching the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices

  • Providing technical expertise and insights during creative sessions and ideation

  • Working with cross-functional teams, fostering a collaborative work environment and contributing creative solutions

  • Advancing concepts through your knowledge of platform capabilities and limitations as you support the design team and work with partner teams

  • Evaluating and documenting any new creative and/or engineering standards or patterns that could arise from your work

  • Partnering with software and hardware engineering to ensure that interactive techniques and technologies translate through to shipping products and services

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

London, GBR

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience

  • Experience in creative coding, front-end development or interactive design, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work

  • Experience with design and creative tools such as Figma, ProtoPie, and AfterEffects

  • Ability to work with ambiguity and visualise solutions for emerging concepts

  • Ability to learn new technologies as you experiment with them for the first time

  • Ability to collaborate with researchers, designers, technologists and other disciplines

  • Ability to simplify complex technical concepts into more non-technical descriptions and solutions for different audiences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proclivity for understanding emerging and future technologies

  • Strong creative and conceptual thinker

  • Unwavering commitment to quality

  • Experience with using data to drive generative and computational creativity

  • Excellent presentation, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
