WSP has a large, highly experienced and friendly Ecology team who get involved with a diverse range of interesting projects across a number of sectors within the UK for both private and public sector clients. We are active in terrestrial and aquatic ecology, biodiversity net gain, ecosystem services and natural capital. Our work on innovative applications of remote sensing is award winning. In addition to working on UK projects, there are also opportunities to work internationally if desired. The team pride themselves on the integrated support offered by working alongside our in-house water, landscape, arboriculture and sustainability specialists to deliver commercially balanced, innovative and integrated solutions.

A typical Consultant Ecologist week would include:

  • Planning and undertaking ecology surveys including Extended Phase 1 habitat/ UK Habs surveys and protected species surveys.

  • Supervision of works in ecologically sensitive areas.

  • Preparation of ecological reports and method statements.

  • Data management and analysis.

WSP offer fantastic training opportunities both internally and externally at Consultant level, allowing you to develop your career as a professional ecologist in a supportive environment.

  • An appropriate academic qualification in Ecology or a related discipline.

  • Qualifying Member status with CIEEM (or are eligible for this).

  • Some demonstrable experience in ecological survey, ideally in a consultancy environment but other experience will be considered, including voluntary work.

  • An enthusiastic, energetic outlook and willingness to learn.

  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.

  • Experience of working with data including spatial data and/or producing GIS maps.

  • An appreciation of relevant wildlife legislation and ecological survey methodologies.

  • A full UK valid driving license.

  • The appetite to work in remote locations, potentially in adverse weather conditions and potentially staying away from home during the working week.

  • Self-confidence and motivation, with good communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • An appropriate academic qualification in a related discipline and at least a Qualifying Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.

  • Experience in ecological consultancy having started to develop core field and reporting skills.

  • Experience in extended Phase 1 habitat survey along with knowledge and experience in protected species surveys, working towards protected species licences.

  • Knowledge of relevant wildlife legislation and ecological survey methodologies.
