Definition

Under direction, is responsible for supervising and participating in the installation, maintenance, and/or removal of ground mounted traffic control signs and/or the preparation, application, and maintenance of pavement markings; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

  • Supervises employees engaged in the installation, maintenance, and removal of ground mounted traffic signs and pavement markings to include performance evaluations, leave requests, and/or first-level disciplinary recommendations;

  • Participates in all phases of ground-mounted sign and pavement marking work;

  • Visually inspects work in progress and/or work completed by subordinates or contracted work to ensure substantial conformance to specifications and plans;

  • Leads daily job assignments of work unit in accordance with Division priorities and procedures;

  • Reads and interprets construction plans or work orders and measures to properly locate traffic control devices;

  • Cleans work site and removes all tools, equipment, and job-related debris;

  • Operates construction equipment to install, maintain, and remove traffic signs and/or to prepare, apply or maintain pavement markings and related equipment;

  • Operates a mobile device to view/edit digital work orders, prepares, and maintains daily records of materials, equipment, and labor so that jobs can be billed properly;

  • Maintains secure inventory of small tools and supplies on the sign and/or paint trucks;

  • Communicates with motorists and pedestrians, giving them directions, and other information relating to Traffic Maintenance projects;

  • Ensures workers are following proper safety procedures; instructs workers in the proper use of equipment and safety procedures;

  • Observes safety guidelines in order to minimize the number and the severity of accidents attributable to the handling of corrosive, toxic, and flammable materials;

  • Ensures proper use of flags and/or verbal signals at worksites in order to minimize the likelihood of accidents involving motorists or pedestrians.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience as a Traffic Maintenance Worker or one (1) year of experience as a Traffic Paint and Sign Worker with the City of Columbus or comparable experience.

Possession of a valid Class B commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing operation of vehicles with air brakes.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create aNEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 80% covering Supervision, Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Logic and Reasoning, Information Ordering, Mathematics, Traffic Maintenance, and Reading Gauges; and a computer simulation weighted 20% covering 2016/2019 Outlook and Word.

The exam is expected to be administered in June. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
